Baby Rocker

Okay, now you all know I favor boy stuff.  However, today I made this little number for one of my nieces.  I call it the rock 'n roll baby dress.  Here are the details....

I had this t-shirt that I really liked, but the neckline was stretched out in a weird way.  I decided to refashion it to a little baby dress, much like the trendy ones you see in the juniors section lately.  Here's the how-to.

1) Cut out the skirt.  I wanted it to be an a-line.  I took the measurement of her waist for the top width and then just angled the skirt out a little.

2) Cut the remaining fabric into strips.  You want the strips to be curved.  The tighter the curve, the more wavy the ruffles will be.  You'll see.

3) Sew the skirt.  You already have your bottom hem from the former shirt.  I sewed the edges first and then I sewed on the elastic waistband, which was the same length as the top of the skirt.  (I used 1/2 inch elastic, but if you make the skirt in a larger size, I'd use a wider elastic.)  The knit fabric can be a little tricky because it continues to stretch as you sew, but you can bunch it up a little as you go to make sure they match up in the end.

4) Sew on your strips.  Take the inner part of your curved pieces and sew it down the skirt in a straight line.  Because it's longer on the outer edge, it will wave back and forth, as seen below.  After they are sewn on you can trim the strips at the top and bottom so they are rounded.  I used white thread because I liked the way the lines peeked out from the waves of fabric.

Since the back of the shirt had no pattern, I made the back of the skirt just plain as well.  Just solid blue.

So, when you're done you get the cuteness of ruffles without having to gather all of the fabric.  I didn't sew the skirt to the tank top because I thought she might be able to wear the skirt a bit lower as she grows.  That way she'll have two different looks and sizes with only one dress.  See?

So, rock on little Brecken.  Now she just needs some little bloomers and some teeny Converse sneakers.  Wouldn't that be adorable?

Thanks for dropping in.  I'll be feautring some of your stuff this week, so if you haven't e-mailed me your links or uploaded to the flickr group, please do!  It's so fun to see what you're all up to.
